Small Steps or a Large Stride?

Abstract

The electronics interconnection industry has progressed from the early invention of the thermionic valve to today's surface mount technology, where the development of large‐scale integration on silicon is the major driving force. The paper considers the changes that lie ahead in board and assembly technology in both the short and long term. It gives the author's view on whether interconnection technology will be subjected to a major change or just small incremental steps.
