Abstract

Biotechnology could have far reaching implications for the food that we eat but its potential will only be realised if it is perceived to be consumer friendly, said Mr Donald Thompson MP, Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, speaking recently at a seminar on the future impact of biotechnology on agriculture. Mr Thompson said: ‘Scientific progress frequently presents us with challenging decisions. At a time when our agricultural industry is having to adjust to the problems of surpluses, biotechnology is propelling us into a new era of food production.
