Facilities management (FM) as a professional discipline has been given a boost by the formation of an FM Group by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). More than 50 of the new forum's membership of 250 met at RICS headquarters in April 1998 for its inaugural session.

Guest speaker, Dr David Owen, said that the forum was needed to maintain standards in FM. He warned that the shortage of qualified FM specialists and good quality managers could lead to untrained practitioners discrediting the profession in the eyes of clients.

Forum chairman, Fred Guscott, said:

"Facilities management is rapidly developing into a true profession. There is a clear need for FM professionals to meet, exchange ideas and knowledge and contribute to the progress of the discipline, so I am delighted with the support we have received from the RICS.

"The quality of the FM Forum membership is and will remain high so, although participation is not restricted exclusively to chartered surveyors, non RICS members must have recognised FM qualifications."
