Drop in Ireland’s ETS emissions in 2009

Article Type: News From: International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management, Volume 2, Issue 3

Emissions from Irish companies covered by the EU’s emissions trading scheme (ETS) in 2009 were down 15 per cent from the previous year, according to government figures recently released. This is well above the 11 per cent drop in 2009 estimated for the entire EU.

The power generation and cement sectors had the largest reduction, reflecting the drop in construction and electricity consumption caused by the economic downturn. The biggest reduction came from the ESB Moneypoint Generating Station on the West coast. Sites covered by the ETS produced 17.22 million tonnes of CO2, less than the country’s allocation of 19.97 million tonnes for 2009. This resulted in an over-allocation compared with previous years when there was an under-allocation, according to the Irish EPA.
