Green shipping initiative launches work plans

The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI) has established four work streams for the next 18 months. The initiative, which was launched in 2011, has 16 corporate members from across the industry and includes green groups such as the WWF and the UK group Forum for the Future.
Between four and seven companies will work on each of the work streams to implement SSI’s vision for 2040. They will address the following issues:

Closed loop materials management. Developing a fully transparent construction and recycling system allowing more efficient reuse of materials and avoiding designs that hinder recycling, such as the use of spray insulation that cannot be removed.

Financing sustainable shipping. Creating new approaches to finance, including piloting at least one new financial model that rewards sustainable performance.
- •
Energy technology. Building robust business cases for new eco-efficient technologies that are not being widely adopted because of the industry’s conservatism and issues such as the lack of independent data.
- •
Credible benchmarking. Developing industry guidance on the range of sustainability standards for shipping to encourage greater uptake.
SSI members include ABN-AMRO, BP shipping, Cargill, DNV, RSA, Unilever, Maersk, Rio Tinto, Carnival, DSME, Bunge and China navigation.
