This special issue on Operational Research Models and Methods in the Energy Sector was organised, managed and prepared by Carlos Henggeler Antunes and Álvaro Gomes of Department of Electrical Engineering and Computers, Polo II, University of Coimbra, 3030 Coimbra, Portugal. Models and approaches based on Operations Research are widely used in the energy sector and offer valuable insights to complex practical problems. This special issue brings eight applied papers which we hope to be useful to researchers and managers alike.

We would like to record our appreciation and indebtedness to the Guest Editors of this special issue for their excellent effort in putting this issue together.

Next year we are planning to publish a special issue of the energy sector issues in India and China, on which our guest editors from India and China are already working. We welcome exciting ideas about special issues for 2010 from interested academics and practicing managers.
