Patients from Dubai and the Middle East will no longer have to travel beyond the country’s or the region’s borders seeking comprehensive specialist treatment for debilitating and disabling musculoskeletal disorders.

The Dubai Bone and Joint Centre (DBAJ), the region’s first specialist orthopaedic facility, has formed a partnership with the Human Motion Institute (HMI) of America to offer a full range of innovative treatments and therapies.

“Musculoskeletal disorders afflict literally hundreds of millions of people globally, placing a huge economic burden on societies. In the Middle East region there are thousands of people suffering distressing, often long-term orthopaedic ailments, yet to date the options available locally have been limited forcing many patients to travel overseas for treatment,” said Suzanne Al Houby, director of DBAJ.

“DBAJ is the first facility of its kind in the region to position itself as a centre of excellence not only in clinical and hospital care but also in research and education,” she said The centre, which opened towards the end of 2004, has forged the partnership with HMI in order to enhance its service offering. HMI brings high levels of expertise in the evaluation, planning, implementation, and management of successful musculoskeletal programmes.

Based in the United States, the specialist health care firm has developed an innovative musculoskeletal treatment programme rolled out by a network of highly qualified healthcare specialists.

“The programme’s primary aim is to return patients to normal function as quickly and safely as possible and is currently being successfully utilised in 63 hospitals across the United States in around 100,000 orthopaedic cases and one million rehabilitation visits per year,” said HMI president, Brian Crowley, who will be heading up the company’s operations in the region and will be permanently based at DBAJ’s office and clinic on the 50th floor of the Emirates Towers.

“Teams of specialists in the relevant disciplines, including orthopaedic surgeons, rheumatologists, sports injury specialists, nurses, physician assistants, rehabilitation specialists and medical support personnel work with patients and their primary care physicians on an individual basis in order to customise leading edge treatment plans to meet their specific needs,” said Crowley.

Areas of specialisation at the DBAJ include emergency and fracture care, foot and ankle, hand and upper extremity care, joint replacement and reconstruction, rehabilitation, spinal care and surgery, sports medicine and sports related injuries and occupational injuries, Phase one of DBAJ is the specialised outpatient clinic catering for a range of conditions, including adult spinal conditions, pelvis and acetabulum, pelvic and acetabular fracture and reconstructive surgery.

It offers total joint arthroplasty, revising total joint arthroplasty and limb lengthening, limb deformity correction and infective non-union surgery.

Phase 2 of the project is a comprehensive out-patient and in-patient 100-bed hospital with rehabilitation and sports medicine facilities. It will incorporate eight operating rooms (ORs) with computer assisted orthopaedic surgery equipment, two minimally invasive or day procedure ORs, spinal and joint units, a replacement and reconstructive surgery unit and specialist paediatric orthopaedics section, all of which will focus on use of innovative therapies.

The 100-bed hospital will offer primary, secondary and tertiary care and will also house educational and training facilities and is scheduled to open towards the end of 2006.

The facility will also house research laboratories, educational and training facilities, primary, secondary and tertiary care. The 100-bed hospital is scheduled to be opened in late 2006.
