Australia’s brightest young researchers working in the areas of cardiovascular disease and cerebral palsy have been awarded co-funding through a unique alliance announced today by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

The NHMRC, the National Heart Foundation of Australia (NHFA) and the Cerebral Palsy (CP) Foundation will support 15 co-funded Fellowships and Scholarships worth over $1.5 million to commence in 2007.

NHMRC CEO, Professor Warwick Anderson, said his organization had matched, dollar for dollar, selected NHFA and CP Foundation grants.

“We are delighted to be part of an initiative that supports emerging and established researchers who are dedicating their careers to cerebral palsy and cardiovascular disease,” Professor Anderson said.

The NHFA will be co-funding three Fellowships and ten Scholarships. Studies will include the effects of endurance exercise on heart function, the role of blood cells called platelets in diabetic heart disease, and the minimization of brain damage after stroke by inhibiting cell division.

Dr Christine Latif, Research Program Manager at the Heart Foundation, said she welcomed the continued association with the NHMRC, and was looking forward to seeing the results of this “vital investment that will improve the heart health of all Australians”.

The Cerebral Palsy Foundation, an initiative of The Spastic Centre, will co-fund 2 Scholarships worth over $55,000 with the NHMRC for the first time in 2007.

The Scholarships focus on the development of a Functional Mobility Scale for children with CP, and diversity of participation by children with CP in the middle years of schooling.

“The CP Foundation is proud to be associated with the NHMRC, with its excellent reputation for funding the best science. We are hopeful of early outcomes that will benefit children affected by cerebral palsy”, said Spastic Centre CEO Mr Rob White.

The 15 co-funded Fellowships and Scholarships awarded underwent the same rigorous review process for all NHMRC grants.
