Article Type: News and views From: International Journal of Health Care Quality Assurance, Volume 21, Issue 6

Keywords Medical treatment, Clinical practice quality, Medical care advancement

India is now emerging as the choice by many for latest and quick medical treatment. A British mother is flying her 14-year-old son, Elliot Knott to India for treatment after discovering he would have to wait months for an operation in the NHS.

The decision to seek treatment in India has been taken after being informed that the patient would have to wait more than four months for an appointment after being left housebound from an ice-skating injury, then face a further wait of at least nine months for an operation. The cost concerns have also been instrumental behind the decision-making process.

The patient is suffering from spondylolisthesis, a condition caused when a vertebrae slips out of line in the spinal column and presses on a nerve and requires immediate medical attention. Surgery may be needed if the patient does not respond to routine treatment.

The above news throws highlight on the demand for highly specialized medical experts with knowledge and skills to handle complex cases. The government should look carefully at the potential costs and benefits of reducing waits even further by developing policies to remove variations in access to services and unacceptable differences in the quality of clinical practices.

To conclude, with the ever increasing demand for medical attention it is particularly important to ensure that that the right people are being identified and referred for the right treatment at the right time.

India is now recognized worldwide as a reliable destination for providing quality medical care at affordable rates. This only reflects the global demand for skilled medical professionals that needs immediate attention.
