Aims and scope
As the threat of the world-wide recession looms large in the coming years, today’s supply chain managers are faced with the challenge of continuously enhancing their companies’ competitiveness in the market. Such a challenge includes the relentless pursuit of supply chain excellence by improving the utilization of company resources, while streamlining the supply chain. The pursuit of supply chain excellence often begins with the assessment of the company’s supply chain performances relative to its main competitors. In other words, supply chain benchmarking represents one of the most important prerequisites to supply chain excellence. With this in mind, this special issue aims to bring together the recent advances in benchmarking tools and their applications to various aspects of supply chain activities including third-party logistics services, commercial airline services, air/ocean port operations, container terminal operations, e-fulfillment operations, warehousing operations, trucking operations, purchasing operations, mass transit systems, and parcel delivery services. Papers centered on building theory or based on actual case studies will be especially welcomed. Also, papers that synthesize the past evolution of benchmarking tools intended for supply chain performance measures and provide future research directions are strongly encouraged. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

The applications of benchmarking tools such as an analytical hierarchy process (AMP), data envelopment analysis (DEA), and/or balanced score card approach to logistics services or purchasing operations

Novel methodology for benchmarking logistics services or purchasing efficiency
- •
The use of SCOR (Supply chain Operations Reference) models for measuring supply chain performances
- •
Assessing the comparative efficiency of third-party logistics providers, trucking firms, airlines, airports, container ports, mass-transit systems, and warehouses
- •
Development of meaningful performance metrics for various logistics services including military acquisition logistics
- •
The assessment of the impact of radio frequency identification (RFID) on logistics service performances
- •
The assessment of the impact of six sigma principles on logistics service performance
- •
The case study of “best-practice” logistics services or purchasing activities
- •
Logistics industry benchmarking in European countries, Pan-Pacific countries, North and South American countries, Middle-eastern countries, and Sub-Saharan countries
- •
Benchmarking the performances (or labor productivity) of supply chain professionals such as logistics managers, warehousing managers, purchasing managers, truck drivers, order pickers, and dispatchers.

Final version of the paper due: December 31, 2008 The submissions will be subject to a double blind peer review process. Papers will be evaluated on their clarity, contribution, suitability to the special issue, and overall quality.
