Editor's note

Article Type: Editor's note From: International Journal of Social Economics, Volume 35, Issue 7

In this special issue, the guest editor and his contributors make a powerful case that government intervention in the Katrina disaster failed to achieve its aims. By and large they argue that market forces would have done a better job. These papers should be taken seriously, for there are even larger disasters in the world, and the American federal and state governments are by no means the least competent in the world. This will hopefully spark a spirited debate. Some readers will want to question the arguments about the relation between the private and public sectors and the notions of social responsibility implied. Some may have their own analysis of the facts. The IJSE is an interdisciplinary journal and there are many ways of looking at these questions. The journal is open to well researched and argued responses.
