CrossRef expands membership

CrossRef appears to continue to grow with 167 publishers now signed up. However it describes itself as "not for profit" which is a bit disingenuous. While this is strictly speaking correct, the participating publishers charge a hefty price for document delivery from the site – unless you already subscribe to the journal in question; in which case you are hardly likely to want to use it! Its Web site states: "CrossRef is in a unique position to support the industry by providing its members with the technology and the infrastructure needed to network the literature, eliminating the need for bilateral linking agreements between publishers. With CrossRef, publishers can support libraries by:

  • allowing patrons to move seamlessly through the relevant body of research;

  • increasing usage of acquired resources;

  • expanding access to content not owned;

  • facilitating the development of localized linking;

  • establishing a new level of service;

  • enhancing end-user satisfaction."
