The Shell Smart Pump

The Shell Smart Pump

Keywords: Shell, Robotics

The Shell Smart Pump, a revolutionary robotic system developed for Shell Oil in 1997, has been operating as a prototype in Sacramento, California, USA (see Plate 2). The Sacramento test site is currently undergoing the UL certification process. It has received hose assembly approvals and is now in the middle of environmental test chamber cycles. Shell has conducted ongoing consumer research studies, and though the data are confidential, Shell reports a very positive response, even more so than their first studies a few years ago at the beginning of the project."In just three years, we've noticed that people are more familiar and accepting of the concept of robots," says Kevin Autin, Director of The Shell Smart Pump project."The Smart Pump is faster, better, and cheaper than when we introduced it in 1997", he states."It is more reliable with faster cycle times." In September 1999, multiple Smart Pump sites in Indianapolis, Indiana, kicked off the pilot market available to the public.
