This invention provides a compact rotary module forming part of an articulated robot structure and having a flexible architecture.
The modular articulated robot structure is composed of a series of independent modules that can connect to each other in various configurations. The modules may be of the rotary, linear, or wheeled type. The rotary modules are generally formed of first and second substantially U-shaped structural members pivotally attached to one another by means of a pair of axles or pivot pins adapted to support a workload exerted on the module. A motor is mounted inside the module for pivoting the second structural member relative to the first. The motor is connected to the second structural member in such a way that it is not submitted to outside loads exerted on the module. Typically, the first and second structural members are provided with cooperating abutment surfaces for increasing the overall structural rigidity of the module when in certain positions.
