Awards for Excellence

Clive Loughlin PhD, BSc, CEng, MIEE, Editor of Assembly Automation, Industrial Robot and Sensor Review is the recipient of a Literati Club Awards for Excellence Leading Editor Award.

The Literati Club was delighted to recognise Dr Loughlin's editorship of the three journals with a Leading Editor Award (Plate 1).

Dr Clive Loughlin studied electronic engineering at Nottingham University, with PhD research into "Eye-in-hand" robot vision. He founded the first UK machine vision company "Electronic Automation Ltd", which is now a part of Marconi. Clive has very broad industrial experience including the design of sensor rich industrial robot systems, CNC machine tools, subsea cable tracking systems, teleoperator robot arms, hydraulics and ROV control systems. In 1990, he became Editor of the International Journals Assembly Automation, Industrial Robot and Sensor Review while remaining active as an electronic systems design engineer.

We are also delighted to announce that John Mortimer was awarded an Outstanding Service Award at the Literati Awards for Excellence 2003 (Plate 2).

John is an engineering journalist with a MSc from Cranfield University. Following an apprenticeship in the aero engine industry, first at D. Napier and Son, he joined de Havilland Engine Company and later Bristol Siddeley Engines (now Rolls-Royce). His move to journalism came with the Oil Engine and Gas Turbine magazine. He then moved to The Engineer where he was editor, and later publishing director. In 1980, he started his own newsletter, Auto Industry, and then became Managing Director of IFS Publications. He launched Industrial Newsletters Ltd in 1985. Since 1996, he has been a freelance journalist for a range of automotive, engineering and specialist magazines and journals.

Emerald would like to thank John for his long-standing support and consistently high quality contributions to Assembly Automation and Industrial Robot.
