Automotive industry giant Nemak has named ABB, the global power and automation technologies group, as the winner of its annual "Excellence Award".

Nemak instigated the award "to recognise and develop outstanding suppliers" as part of its efforts to ensure the highest standards in its suppliers and secure its own position as global leader.

Nemak produces some 40 types of cylinder head and 15 different engine blocks for the world's leading automotive manufacturers including Daimler-Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Opel, Renault, and Jaguar.

ABB won the award for its excellence in providing robotic solutions and services for the automotive company. Nemak operates seven plants in Mexico and Canada, with an eighth to be opened in the Czech Republic in 2003.

Nemak has a total of 270 ABB robots at work in its plants in several applications: sand core extraction and assembly; palletising; machine tending; aluminium pouring; and material handling (Plate 2).
