KMT Cutting Systems wins first waterjet cutting order in Australia

Keywords: Robotics

Confirming the company’s position as a truly worldwide supplier of robotic waterjet cutting and routing systems, KMT Cutting Systems (formerly ABB I-R Waterjet Systems) has announced the company’s first order in Australia. The new 650,000 AUD order has been placed by Johnson Controls of Melbourne, a Tier I supplier to both General Motors and Ford in Australia.

The equipment purchased by Johnson Controls includes a Cutting Box Stationary IV waterjet cutting system with two robots and a new intensifier to supply very high pressure water to the system. The Cutting Box Stationary IV system will be used to trim headliners for Holden (general motors) cars in Australia (Plate 6).

The new Cutting Box Stationary IV system being supplied to Johnson Controls will have a “handshake” capability, allowing it to communicate with the moulding system producing the headliners. This ensures a smooth transfer of parts, whereby the waterjet system is fed automatically with parts on a conveyor that runs from the moulding plant.

Paul Etchells, Sales Manager for KMT Cutting Systems, commented: “Our proven knowledge and technical expertise in waterjet cutting were key factors in winning the order from Johnson Controls in preference to local suppliers. We have over 500 of our waterjet cutting systems working around the Globe. Like all of these products, the Johnson Controls system is backed by a worldwide service and support package which is second to none”.

The Cutting Box from KMT Cutting Systems is the company’s core system for three-dimensional, pure waterjet cutting technology. It is aimed primarily at trim applications, particularly for interior components of cars and other vehicles made from soft materials such as polyurethane foam, moulded fibres, sandwich materials or composites.

There are different types of cutting box to choose from, allowing the customer to match the system to their application requirements, taking into account the required capacity, the production environment, operating costs, flexibility, safety and ergonomics, as well as compatibility with other waterjet systems and other parts of the production process.

As well as a full range of optional accessories, KMT Cutting Systems can supply many additional services including the integration of various parts fixtures and set-up programming to cut parts whilst a system is being built. In this way, the machine is immediately ready for production as soon as the installation on site is completed. The time saved during the period between the installation and the actual start of production start is a key parameter for saving costs today. It helps to accelerate the return on investment for customers.
