Demographic change and the fashion market

Demographic change and the fashion market

A large number of mature, developed economies (such as the UK, France and Germany) are experiencing significant demographic change in the sense that their populations are ageing rapidly. These are the major markets for apparel/fashion. It is probable that these changes will have special significance for apparel/fashion markets because all the available evidence suggests that younger people are more interested in fashion than older people and that older people have different spending priorities than younger people. On the other hand, it is often argued that older people in the 21st century do not behave as their chronological age might indicate. We are, therefore, planning to devote Volume 9.4 of the journal to these issues and would be pleased to receive papers on any aspect of the potential impact of demographic change on the demand for apparel/fashion. Expressions of interest with a brief outline of proposed content and research methodology employed should be sent to the editor by the end of March 2005 while completed papers would need to be submitted by the end of May 2005. In both cases all submissions should be sent to D.Berriman@mmu.ac.uk in the normal manner.
