Hog bristles in curries, caterpillars in milk and mouse droppings in biscuits all great stories for the popular press but at what cost to the food industry? A recent report from the Staffordshire County Trading Standards has revealed that 358 complaints about food and drink were logged in one single three-month period. According to last year's Food Control Statistics report published by MAFF which collates food contamination incidents from local authorities throughout the country, Staffordshire is by no means alone in this problem. Apart from the health risk to consumers associated with a major contamination scare, the long-term damage to a company's corporate image must also be considered. The public has a long memory when it comes to food safety and one incident of contamination can take many years to live down.
