Report on diet and bone health

Report on diet and bone health

The report, Nutrition and Bone Health: With Particular Reference to Calcium and Vitamin D, has been prepared by a working group of independent scientists and doctors of the Committee on Medical Aspects of Food and Nutrition Policy (COMA). Welcoming the report Tessa Jowell, Minister for Public Health, said that a balanced diet goes a long way to promoting health and that includes healthy bones. The report's main recommendations are to adopt a healthy lifestyle to maintain bone health; choose a varied and adequate diet; ensure an adequate calcium intake; encourage regular physical activity at all ages; continue the statutory requirements for the fortification of flour with calcium and margarine with vitamin D; and include the appropriate use of vitamin supplements for those most at risk. One of the groups at risk of vitamin D deficiency is older people, particularly those living in residential homes. The Health Authority has been commissioned to take forward a health promotion programme specifically aimed at older people. Copies of the HEA's consumer factsheet on the nutritional aspects of bone health can be obtained from HEA Customer Services, Marston Book Services, P O Box 269, Abingdon, Oxon OX14 4YN.
