Food poisoning figures

Melody Greenwood, in a paper presented at a one-day symposium of food safety organised by The Society of Food Hygiene Technology, said there is a 1 in 50 chance each year of suffering an episode of gastroenteritis. Notifications of food poisoning continue to rise and now exceed 100,000 per annum in the UK. Investigations have shown that the true rate of intestinal infectious disease may be even up to 18 times the reported rate. There was some good news, too, in that the reported cases of Salmonella showed a significant decrease for the first time in ten years. However, Campylobacter Infection, which is the most frequent cause of illness but has little public awareness, increased by a further 10 per cent in 1998. The main cause of this was contaminated poultry meat. Melody Greenwood felt that not enough advice is given about the safe handling of raw meat and poultry.
