Improved care for drug mis-users

New clinical guidelines will improve standards of care for drug mis-users, Tessa Jowell, Minister for Public Health, announced recently. New licensing proposals point the way to tighten up the prescription of methadone and reduce the risk of overdose and leakage onto the illegal market. The guidelines focus on specialist support and on training to improve the standards of care for drug users. They will enable users to be treated effectively and safely in their own community. Only doctors with sufficient training and expertise will undertake prescribing of certain controlled drugs to treat drug addiction. Copies of Drug Misuse and Dependence – Guidelines on Clinical Management are available from the Stationery Office and a version will also be available on the Internet.
