Beating back pain

Back pain is the leading cause of sickness absence from work in the UK. An estimated 11 million working days a year are lost due to this painful and often disabling condition The Back to Work programme is part of the Government's Healthy Workplaces initiative and it aims to tackle this problem by promoting good practice to raise awareness and encourage people to take preventative action and by providing early access to assessment, treatment and rehabilitation. As yet there is poor awareness in industry of how back pain can be prevented, what causes it and how sufferers should be treated. A special exhibition at the Science Museum shows how ergonomics is used in designing workplaces, products and systems to make them safe and easy to use.
