Children and young people on child protection registers

In the year ending March 1999 there were 31,900 children on child protection registers in the UK, 1 per cent more than a year earlier. This figure represents 28 children per 10,000 population aged under 18. There were more boys than girls on the register, a reversal of the position a decade ago. Twenty-five per cent (7,900) of the children on the register were looked after by local authorities. Forty-two per cent of registrations during 1998/99 related to children considered at risk of neglect: this proportion has been rising steadily since 1994. In contrast the use of the categories, physical injury and sexual abuse, has fallen. Fourteen per cent of children leaving the register had been on it for over two years: this proportion has increased slightly over the last year.
