Reduction in maternal death

A century ago, giving birth was a major health risk for women with over five out of every thousand dying in labour. Recent advances in medical science and public health mean that there has never been a healthier time to have a baby. Now, the death rate has been reduced to five deaths in 100,000. Not only mothers' but babies' lives are being saved. A hundred years ago, over 83,000 babies were dying under the age of one in the UK every year. This has now been reduced to 1,100 deaths a year and, as technology advances, this figure will continue to decline. Applications for midwifery training courses rose by 61 per cent last year and good maternity services will continue to be at the heart of this Government's policies.
