Food wastage in the NHS

Food wastage in the NHS

It is estimated the £45 million is wasted annually on NHS food not eaten in hospitals. Health Minister Lord Philip Hunt recently announced the publication of Reducing Food Wastage in the NHS to minimise food wastage. The publication aims to promote good practice by detailing who is responsible for controlling food wastage, control stages in the hospital food cycle, and to promote good practice indicators. The new guidance has been developed by the Hospital Caterers Association in conjunction with NHS Estates and will aim to improve the quality, presentation and standards of food for all patients in hospital to make their stay as comfortable as possible. The new guidance will highlight where food wastage occurs and how it can be controlled.
