The Department of Health has announced details of deliveries from 1995-96 to 1997-98. In 1997-98 about 20 per cent of deliveries were induced. Over 18 per cent of deliveries were by caesarian section and more than half of these were emergency caesareans. About 10 per cent of birth deliveries were instrumental deliveries and epidural or spinal anaesthetics were reported to be used in one quarter of all deliveries.
