Healthy eating for children
Healthy eating for children
Getting children to eat healthily can be a big problem. How do we get over the message that it is better for them to eat an apple rather than a bag of crisps? A study carried out by the Food Standards Agency among 500 hundred children in Dundee, where 464 children in two further schools acted as controls, showed that cartoon characters can be used to get the message across. Bash Street Kids were the cartoon characters they used to promote the nutritional value of fruit and vegetables through school tuck shops and school lunch options. Tasting opportunities, posters, quizzes, newletters and curriculum materials were also used. Copies of both final research reports are available from the FSA's Library and Information Service.
