The Hospital Caterers Association

The Hospital Caterers Association (HCA) annual conference was held in Cardiff, Wales on 18-20 April.

The event was attended by hospital caterers from the NHS and commercial suppliers of hospital food, equipment and services. The theme of the conference was "Myth, magic, fact or fiction".

The opening presentation was by the Minister of Health and Social Services for Wales. There was a focus on the importance of food in health care and presentations included:

  • One from Dr Stroud a Consultant Gastroenterologist on the importance of food in health care, which clearly showed that a lack of food can significantly affect the prognosis of a patient and lead to numerous clinical problems.

  • Lloyd Grossman updated the audience on the Better Hospital Food Project.

  • Richard Wilson a Director of Dietetics discussed the tremendous value of food as part of the treatment of those in hospital.

  • The Audit Commission detailed their new approach to performance audit.

Other presentations included food hygiene, the Food Standards Agency and emotional intelligence. The magic of the conference title was addressed by a presentation on Feng Shui in NHS Catering Management.

The conference included a number of trade stands from NHS suppliers.
