Lactose intolerance underestimated says Huntingdon consultant writing in the BMJ

Lactose intolerance – an inability to digest the milk-sugar lactose – may affect far more people than is realised, says a doctor who himself suffers from the condition in which eating dairy products results in diarrhoea, colic and flatulence.

Huntingdon consultant histopathologist Michael D. Harris says his own "gut rot" started about seven years ago when he was in his mid-30s and the symptoms became "quite distressing". Since diagnosis he has tried to avoid lactose by not eating dairy products and substituting vegetable products.

Although lactose intolerance is thought to be relatively uncommon in the UK "in parts of Asia and Africa lactose affects up to 90 per cent of the population", Mr Harris points out.

Oatly, an oat "milk" from Sweden, could prove very beneficial in cases similar to this. You can drink it by the glass, put it on your cereal and use this healthy dairy milk substitute, which also has the cholesterol-lowering properties of oats, in cooking generally, in puddings, cakes and sauces.
