Improving nutrition education: new online resource is launched

Food in Focus: A Training Resource on Nutrition and Health has been launched by the British Meat Nutrition Education Service (BMNES) and is now available online for healthcare professionals and students throughout the UK, for use as part of training and education programmes.

This educational tool has been developed in conjunction with an editorial panel of senior nurse lecturers from higher education institutes.

Commenting on the availability of the new resource, Alison Coutts, Lecturer at St Bartholomew's School of Nursing & Midwifery, City University, London and editorial panel member, who was involved in the development of the resource said: "The need for nutrition education, particularly at pre-registration level is important, however, it is a subject which is sometimes overlooked. The development of this practical educational resource will help to explain the importance of the balanced diet and healthy eating will assist in raising the profile of nutrition in healthcare education."

The resource focuses on general nutrition and is available online in an "easy-to-navigate" pictorial format. Included in the text are ideas for group discussion and self-study giving the resource both a theoretical and a hands-on approach.

Divided into three different sections, the first examines healthy eating and today's eating habits and the other sections look in more detail at the different food groups and individual nutrients contained in food products.

The resource complements a series of nutritional information guides available for healthcare professionals to use when giving dietary advice to their patients. Visit the Web site at: www.meatandhealth.com and click on the training icon.
