Research validates probiotics claim to help keep immune system in peak condition.

Clinical trials have demonstrated the potential benefits of cosseting the gut to improve its flora. Also that probiotics can boost the immune system year round helping to keep viral infections at bay. ProViva, containing one of the most researched bacteria LP299v, is a fruit juice probiotic which works not only to improve the immune status of people who are susceptible to infection but also to help maintain healthy people in that condition.

A trial in the American Journal of Gastroenterology (Vol. 95 No. 1 (supp.), 2000) demonstrated that ProViva improved gut health and boosted the body’s immune system. Dr Susanna Cunningham-Rundles – Professor of Immunology at the New York hospital, Cornell University Weill Medical Centre, USA – chose to demonstrate the beneficial effects of LP299v in HIV children because it followed that if children, whose natural defences were very vulnerable could benefit, then people temporarily in need of a boost would quickly benefit too.

Dr Cunningham-Rundles believes that LP299v is the “gold standard” for a probiotic microbe that you would want to introduce into the diet. “It adheres well in the gut and will preferentially colonise it” she says “because it is not sensitive to a large number of antibiotics, it can be given at the same time as other antibiotic therapy and will be protective of gastrointestinal flora”.

Many people today are now concerned about viral infections. Drinking a daily glass of ProViva (200ml is the recommended daily dose for an adult) could be a sensible move. A one litre pack of strawberry or blackcurrant ProViva costs £1.79 and can be found in the chill cabinet of most major supermarkets. The product is suitable for adults and children, including vegetarians. Visit the ProViva Consumer Information Web site at www.proviva.co.uk
