The Nutrition & Health Show

The Nutrition & Health Show

This was held at London's Olympia on 25-26 September 2004 and brought together the country's leading professional health experts from The British Dietetic Association, the Nutrition Society and The British Nutrition Foundation for the first time.

This show was launched to offer the general public practical and trustworthy advice and health checks to help them live longer, healthier lives.

Organiser Tanya Carr is an established nutritionist with a mission: "I talk to people every day who are baffled by all the publicity, and don't know where to start in terms of getting objective no-nonsense advice and guidance. Now, for the first time, there is a one-stop nutrition and health shop where they can get all the help they need to put them on the right road".

Among a number of interactive features was a Health Check Consultation Trail, where visitors could get free cholesterol tests, blood pressure tests, body fat measurements, fitness tests and blood sugar tests, which could then be analysed by registered dietitians in the Consultation Zone.

The British Dietetic Association supported a public show for the first time by organising for their registered dietitians to give expert advice and guidance on dietary issues.

There were also fitness and cookery zones, as well as lectures, seminars and workshops, including:

  • Top tips for controlling your blood pressure with diet and lifestyle.

  • Living with diabetes.

  • Diet for hyperactivity and attention deficit.

  • Allergies: fact or fiction?

  • The journey of your food – links with bowel cancer.

  • Good bone health – your diet and exercise questions answered.

  • What's all the fuss about soya?

  • Child nutrition questions and answer session i.e. fussy eaters, adolescents who love junk food, how to get my child eating well.

  • Dietary strategies to help prevent cancer.

  • Controlling the menopause through diet and lifestyle.

  • Being a healthy vegetarian.

  • Could you be wheat intolerant and coeliac?

  • Laughing your way to health.

  • Calorie expenditure and good posture – everyday top tips.

Apart from the impartial expert advice and information from the galaxy of supporting and participating organisations, the show also placed importance on the quality and reputation of those who were exhibiting. All materials were checked by the show's selection committee to ensure that there was sound scientific evidence to support any health claims or messages.
