The United Kingdom Public Health Association (UKPHA) Annual Conference
The United Kingdom Public Health Association (UKPHA) Annual Conference
Telford, 14-15 March, 4 April 2006
This was the 14th annual public health forum. The conference covered various aspects of health. The government speaker, Health Secretary, Patricia Hewitt said it was currently the “better-off and better educated” who were taking on board the messages about diet, smoking, drinking and exercise. “We need to be most concerned about the worst off” she said.
The role of the government was to create an environment in which healthy choices could be made. For example, she said, “the Food Standards Agency’s healthy food labelling scheme would create the environment by giving information, but it is the individual and the family who make the healthy - or unhealthy - choice.”
With particular reference to nutrition, healthy vending was discussed and from trials it was noted that healthy products did sell particularly milk and dairy products.
