Halal Chocolate

September 2006, Tesco and Ummah Foods were pleased to announce that the new Ummah orange and Ummah caramel chocolate bars are to be trialled in selected stores. The halal milk chocolate bars were launched in the Bradford, Batley, Slough, Watford and Brent Park stores in the first week of September in time for Ramadan, which this year commenced on 24th September.

Explained Khalid Sharif, managing director of Ummah Foods, "Muslim consumers are looking for specific products tailored to meet their religious and community needs. Mainstream supermarkets must embrace and reach out to this growing community which unequivocally defines itself by faith".

The launch will take the availability of these ethnic chocolates beyond that of their current niche marketplace in order to serve the large number of Muslim consumers that shop at Tesco. By listing confectionery from Ummah Foods, Tesco continues to expand its current dynamic halal and ethnic foods' fixture and broadens its appeal to the multifaceted Muslim market.

Tesco's ethnic food buyer Jay Popet said "We are very pleased to introduce the Ummah Foods chocolate range into our stores. Not only is it a very good product but it complements our fast growing and diverse halal food range. We understand that the needs of the Muslim consumer are changing and we are committed to meet these evolving demands".

Ummah Foods prides itself on representing the evolving British Muslim community, which endeavours to amalgamate both its Western and Islamic lifestyles in order to live a peaceful and harmonious life. By commissioning a Muslim artist to fuse graffiti and Arabic for the Orange Creme wrapper, Ummah Foods intends to illustrate its support for the fresh and exciting expression that is undoubtedly materialising from British Muslims.
