Safety awards for food, drink and tobacco firms

Around 70 companies involved in food, drink and tobacco manufacturing have been honoured at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents Occupational Health and Safety Awards.

The sector winner was Unilever UK Trafford Park, Manchester, with British Bakeries Windsor, Berkshire, highly commended and British Sugar York Factory, York, commended.

Other food, drink and tobacco companies won two bronze awards, 15 silver, 30 gold awards, 13 gold medals, five president's awards and one order of distinction. Sainsbury's Store Support Centre, London, also won a silver award for managing occupational road risk.

Tom Mullarkey, RoSPA Chief Executive, said: "Organisations and businesses which not only proclaim the importance of health and safety, but actually deliver consistent standards of health and safety risk management deserve full recognition.

"To be judged best in sector, contenders have to demonstrate outstanding approaches to issues such as director leadership, workforce involvement and the use of professional services.

"Winners of this year's RoSPA sector awards and other major trophies have demonstrated commitment to preventing accidents and work-related ill-health and have not only saved lives and reduced injuries, but contributed to business excellence. Sector award winners stand as a beacon to other organisations and we urge others to learn from and emulate their achievements."

Organisations compete for the sector awards and specialist trophies, but there are also achievement awards at merit, bronze, silver, gold, gold medal, president's and order of distinction levels. There were 1,400 winners this year who work towards very high levels of performance, demonstrating well-developed occupational health and safety management systems and culture, outstanding control of risk and very low levels of error, harm and loss.

The awards, sponsored by NEBOSH, were presented over three days (22-24 May) of gala dinners and ceremonies at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole Hotel, at the NEC, attended by nearly 3,000 people.

The presentations were made by Baroness Gibson of Market Rasen, President of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, Lord Jordan of Bournville, Deputy President, Lord Brougham and Vaux, Vice-President and Tom Mullarkey, RoSPA Chief Executive.
