Vitafoods International, Europe's leading nutraceutical and functional foods exhibition, brings together all the world's manufacturers of nutraceutical ingredients, dietary supplements and cosmeceutical ingredients. Returning to Geneva Palexpo in May 2007 this year, the event was bigger than ever in terms of exhibition size and visitor numbers.

A host of exciting features were on offer to visitors at Vitafoods International, including New Products Zone, the Annual Vitafoods Discussion Forum, a Finished Product Area, the Seminar Theatre and the Vitafoods International Conference. And new this year was Vitaroma, organised in conjunction with Denzil Phillips International, where visitors can experience flavours and aromas from around the world through the five aspects of the display; touch, taste, smell, experience and learn.

Part of the Vitafoods event included a Supplier Seminar Theatre. This featured various presentations over the three days including:

  • Micronutrient fortification: the challenges associated with fortifying foods and beverages.

  • The role of DPA and other omega-3 fatty acids in cardiovascular health.

  • The anti-inflammatory potential of omega-3 phospholipids in health and nutrition.

  • Lutein and lutein esters: myths and reality.

  • Vitafoods Discussion Forum.

This discussion forum included:

  • Food supplements and fortification directives next steps: maximum levels, negative lists, extension of the food supplement directive – Fabio D'Atri, Administrator, Food Law, Nutrition and Labelling, DG Sanco, European Commission.

  • Botanical ingredients: growing market, growing challenges – Manfred Ruthstaz, Director International Regulatory Affairs, Inneov.

  • Novel Foods and ethical trading initiative – Rik Kutsch Lojenga, Programme Manager, Bio Trade Facilitation Programme, UNCTAD.

  • Health claims regulation: preparing for the impact – Katherine Veal, Head of Regulatory Information, Leatherhead Food International.

As well as an interactive discussion where there was a chance for the audience to put questions to the expert panel.
