Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo 2007 (FNCE) of the American Dietetic Association

Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo 2007 (FNCE) of the American Dietetic Association

Philadelphia Convention Centre, USA, 29 September-2 October 2007

The 90th American Dietetic Association Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo attracted over 10,000 delegates. The conference started with a key note speech from the president who encouraged the dietitians of America to reflect who they are, where they wanted to go and how to get there.

The American Dietetic Association (ADA) has about 64,000 members. Acknowledgements of their excellent work were made with an emphasis on:

  • the research that they had undertaken on a range of topics;

  • the way they had produced newly validated courses on nutrition and aging and sports nutrition;

  • a film clip of the promotion of the role of the Registered Dietitians Society;

  • information on their history over the last 90 years.

The conference was a vast event with concurrent sessions on topics such as:

  • Obesity.

  • Diabetes.

  • Inflammatory diseases and nutrition.

  • Ethics.

  • HIV.

  • Nutrition ergonomics.

  • Diet and Exercise.

  • Food products.

Full papers of all topics will all be available in due course on the ADA website. There was also an interactive session on various topics each day. Smaller booths of ADA societies were present and also representatives of the ADA who ran organisations or who had written books also exhibited. A poster display changed on each day of the conference. A library of books mainly from the ADA featured. There was also a huge expo of companies promoting nutrition products.

Future FNCE dates are

  • 25-28 October 2008, Chicago;

  • 17-20 October 2009, Denver;

  • 6-9 November 2010, Boston;

  • 24-27 September 2011, San Diego.

Overall this was a mind blowing and intense conference. Of particular note were small exhibitors from members of the ADA who were promoting their own practice, products, books and educational materials. Also the special groups of the ADA had a small exhibition promoting their services.

There is to be a national nutrition month in March 2008 held by the ADA – www.eatright.org

The International Congress of Dietetics is to be held in September 2008. For information on the conference go to the website of the ADA – www.eatright.org
