Sustainable packaging conference notes from CCFRA

Article Type: Food Facts From: Nutrition & Food Science, Volume 38, Issue 3.

Notes from a recent conference on the theme sustainable food packaging: current biodegradable and compostable solutions are now available from CCFRA. By discussing the latest developments in biodegradable and compostable packaging materials they will help food manufacturers to ensure that their products are viewed as environmentally acceptable.

The primary function of packaging has always been to protect the product, optimise its shelf life, aid distribution, and provide a marketing medium to promote the product. However, retailers and manufacturers are increasingly being faced with the growing pressure to make packaging "sustainable" and more environmentally friendly. Although the idea of sustainable packaging appears attractively simple, there are many aspects that need to be considered if true sustainability is to be achieved, and real environmental benefits are to be realised. These conference proceedings comprise the visual aids used by the speakers along with brief summaries of some of the presentations.
