Heartbeat Award, Northamptonshire
Article Type: Conference reports From: Nutrition & Food Science, Volume 39, Issue 2.
This award was initiated by the Health Education Authority in 1987 that were later replaced by the Health Development Agency in 2000 to assist caterers in providing food that is both hygienically prepared and healthy.
It aims to help combat the rising rate of obesity, which is more rapid in the UK than elsewhere in Europe.
In Northamptonshire the award has been running for many years and in September it was re-launched as a 2-tier award with a standard and a gold level.
The standard award is for caterers who can demonstrate and document;
- •
A high standard of food hygiene; and
- •
A menu that provides healthy options.
For the “gold” award a caterer must;
- •
A high level of food hygiene;
- •
Allergy awareness; and
- •
A manager or supervisor with level 2 training in nutrition.
At present in Northamptonshire there are over 300 Heartbeat award holders and the majority of these attended the event.
It is hoped that many will move on to undertake further training and enable them to be assessed for and given the gold award.
