Notes on key reviews in this issue

Article Type: Editorial notes and queries From: Reference Reviews, Volume 25, Issue 4

  • Berg Fashion Library (RR 2011/184). One of the major reference landmarks of the year, this major new online database from independent publisher Berg contains 760 articles provided by over 600 contributors. Also available as a ten volume printed set under the title Berg Encyclopedia of World Dress and Fashion, the online version, as primarily examined in our review, offers additional content such as e-books from the same publisher and images from the Victoria and Albert Museum.

  • Boom and Busts: An Encyclopedia of Economic History from Tulipmania of the 1630s… (RR 2011/155). A title likely to attract considerable interest due to the current economic climate, this three volume set from independent publisher M. E. Sharpe contains 360 articles on economic peaks and troughs starting with the Dutch tulip speculation of the seventeenth century.

  • Brill’s Encyclopedia of Hinduism. Volume II: Sacred Texts and Languages (RR 2011/150). Part of Brill’s major new set projected for completion in five volumes. The initial volume was previously subject to a full review (RR 2010//201).

  • Encyclopedia of Criminological Theory (RR 2011/157). Another encyclopedia from Sage Publications in the publisher’s social sciences heartland and in the company’s usual style, with a mix of essays and shorter entries. Available as an e-book (as reviewed) or in two volumes.

  • The Oxford Encyclopedia of Medieval Warfare and Military Technology (RR 2011/191). Likely to be the standard reference on medieval conflict for years to come. Offers more than 1,000 entries provided by over 200 international contributors. Available as a three volume set or online as part of Oxford Digital Reference Shelf.

  • Wiley-Blackwell Handbook of Childhood Cognitive Development (2nd ed.) (RR 2011/154). Update to the well-received initial volume published less than a decade ago (RR 2003/56).

  • World Geography and Culture Online (RR 2011/194). One of a number of databases from Facts on File/Infobase Publishing which aggregates data from a variety of sources to provide a product especially suitable for upper school and public libraries. While offering content mainly tailored to a North American audience, these databases, and especially those with international scope such as this title, have value elsewhere.
