Dealing with a disaster

Murray R.Personnel Today, 21 Feb 2006, Start page: 28, No of pages: 2

Purpose – To look at the crucial importance, particularly in light of recent natural disasters and terrorist acts, of disaster recovery or business continuity plans for the survival of companies in the wake of a major incident. Design/methodology/approach – Notes that businesses in the Docklands commemorated, in February 2006, the tenth anniversary of the IRA Docklands bombing and laments the fact that, even so, many organizations do not have a business continuity plan in place. Outlines the damaging psychological effects disasters (small as well as large scale) can have on individuals, and emphasizes how these effects make it imperative that any disaster recovery plan takes into account the impact of stress and trauma (and the need to provide post-trauma support programmes) on the organization’s employees. Originality/value – Highlights, although very briefly, the need to develop a disaster recovery plan.ISSN: 0959-5848Reference: 35AH020
