Examines the business case for integrating the enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems used by companies of all sizes. Discusses the way in which many large companies find that enterprise-wide ERP suites do not always cater for the demands of niche business areas, while products from mid-market ERP suppliers with a niche industry focus are often added to the product mix. Reveals how this can lead to a two-tier ERP scheme, but also to a need to provide integration between niche products and enterprise-wide systems. Concludes that reluctance to standardize on a single product means emerging software as a service (SaaS) based ERP products will often serve only niches. Illustrates these points with particular reference to the results of a questionnaire survey of ERP systems users, undertaken by Quocirca, and a case study based on Midland Co-op’s three-phase ERP project which sets out the measures involved in each of the three phases.Article type: ViewpointISSN: 0010-4787Reference: 39AP038
