Dietary approaches for atherosclerosis prevention: vegetable protein

Healthy food choices in the European guidelines on CVD prevention: how about the implementation in clinical practice?

Dietary guidelines need an implementation plan since surveys in daily practice show an unacceptable gap. The EUROASPIRE II survey, conducted in 15 different centres (Lancet, 2001, Vol. 357, pp. 995-1001), set out to determine whether patients with CHD are being effectively managed by lifestyle and drugs. Of the total survey sample, 59 per cent had reduced their calories intake, but there was wide variation between countries. Despite this, 80 per cent of patients were still overweight. Overall 87 per cent said they had reduced fat intake in the diet and 36 per cent had changed the type of fat they eat. However, at the time of the interview the proportion of the sample with total cholesterol >5mmol/L was 58 per cent. The results of the EUROASPIRE III survey were available at the end of 2006.
